New Bell 407 for PHI

Last week during my normal time off from PHI I was asked to come in early and do some overtime work over. I was flown from Lafayette to Bristol Tennessee to pick brand new Bell 407.The civilian Bell factory is located in Mirabel Canada but interestingly enough many customers pick up their new helicopters in Tennessee. In Bristol…See More

Trip Across the USA (Part 4)

Part 4 of my Trip Across the USA takes me to El Paso, TX. El Paso is a very unique airport in that it has Mexican airspace less than 15 NM away and it has a large mountain range just to the West of the airport. The mountains make for an interesting take off if the wind is coming from the west. As you go east from El Paso you fly…See More

Trip Across the USA (Part 3)

Part 3 of my trip across the USA takes me from Tucson AZ, to El Paso, TX. Tucson is home to many cool aircraft from the military. Since Tucson is in such a dry climate they bring decommissioned aircraft here to store because they don’t rust as easy. From a pilots stand point, it is kind of sad to see all these awesome machines not…See More

Trip Across the USA (Part) 2

Part 2 of my trip to Florida from Los Angeles, is to fly through the desert and stop at Thermal, CA then to Tucson, AZ. Los Angeles is surrounded by mountains and this keeps the cool ocean air in the valley that Los Angeles was built in. When you fly or drive east you must pass through the Banning Pass. On the left of the pass is the tallest mountain in Southern California called Mount Gorgonio, which is 11,500 feet tall.  On the other side of the pass is Palm Springs and the desert. When I took…See More

Flying and Baseball

On Monday, Chris and I flew up to Arlington to satisfy his cross country PIC requirement and to catch a Texas Rangers baseball game.  We watched the Rangers beat the White Sox, 4-0. Both Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz returned to the Rangers to hit home runs. Alexi Ogando threw a beautiful complete game shutout.  The next morning we flew over downtown Dallas, Cowboys stadium, The Ballpark in Arlington, and Six Flags. Here are some of the pictures from our long adventure. …See More

Flight to College Station for some baseball

On Tuesday my student Chris and I planned a long cross country flight from Stinson to Easterwood Airport in College Station. Our goal was to fulfill Chris’s commercial cross country requirements for a 2 hour day cross country and a 2 hour night cross country. On the way up I texted my cousin who is in school at my alma mater,…See More

A Visit from the Stinson Family

On Sunday a relative of the namesake of Stinson Airport paid a visit. Jan Stinson the Great Grand Niece of Katherine Stinson was visiting San Antonio and came by the airport to see some of her family history. There is defiantly a noticeable resemblance between Jan and Katherine especially in the smile, see picture 1.   Some of…See More
